Dear participants,

We will not be rescheduling the 2016 Great Columbia Crossing 10k.

After much consideration, we did not feel that rescheduling the event was feasible. We coordinate with roughly 60 agencies, contractors, suppliers and nonprofits to schedule the Great Columbia Crossing, a process that takes the better part of a year. We also rely on the time of nearly 100 volunteers who help with event prep and in various roles on race day. Plus, much of our staff time is already dedicated to organizing three other annual festivals and events we are hosting in early 2017. All of these factors contributed to this incredibly difficult decision.

As you might expect, many of our production expenses were paid well in advance of the event cancellation. We also believe it is important to honor our donations to the area nonprofits that were scheduled to assist us on race day and have issued them payment in full. We host this event to benefit our community, and this is just one way we can help offset the burden of this year’s cancellation.

In the same spirit, we’d like to help offset your financial burdens. We are under no obligation to offer registration refunds for the Great Columbia Crossing, under any circumstances, per the agreement you signed on your registration form. However, we understand that many of you took time off work and incurred travel and/or lodging expenses to take part in our event, on top of your registration fees.

As a thank you for your commitment to and enthusiasm for our event, we will be mailing a $20 check to each of our 2,800 registered participants, to the addresses we have on file.

Additionally, if you were unable to pick up your 2016 Great Columbia Crossing packet materials (including shirts, if pre-purchased) and would still like them, please fill out this form to help us facilitate this process. We will cover the costs associated with mailing your materials, but we have also provided you the option to donate via PayPal to cover these costs. Please fill out the form to claim your items by Dec. 31, 2016. Any items unclaimed after that date will be recycled, reused or resold.

Thank you for your patience during the past couple weeks while we deliberated, discussed and evaluated our options. We also ask for your continued patience as we mail out checks, packets and shirts, which will take time. We are grateful for the support and understanding that many of you have shown us.

We hope you will join us in making the 2017 Great Columbia Crossing 10k greater than ever before. See you on the bridge on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017.

All the best,

Kelsey Balensifer Event Coordinator, Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce

Dear participants,

It is with a great sense of sadness that we are canceling Sunday’s Great Columbia Crossing 10k.

We made this decision in coordination with the Oregon Department of Transportation and local law enforcement. With the impending storm on Saturday, we anticipate that our first responders and medical personnel will be attending to area emergencies on Saturday night and Sunday morning and will not be able to assist with our event. Several of these support agencies have already informed us that they will be unable to provide their services on race day, and it would be unwise and unsafe for us to continue without adequate staffing for traffic control, security, medical response, etc.

Additionally, we are aware that many of our participants are traveling considerable distances to participate in our event, even while possibly facing dangerous road and weather conditions. We do not want anyone to risk their safety for the sake of our event – it’s simply not worth it. For those of you who have already made the trip, we hope you’ll enjoy all the other great things the Astoria-Warrenton area has to offer. Packet Pick Up will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at our offices (111 W. Marine Drive, Astoria, OR 97103) for those who still want their shirts and packets. Please let us know if you would like yours mailed instead.

At this time, we are going to make every effort to reschedule the 2016 Great Columbia Crossing for later this year. We will be in contact again when we know more.

Thank you for your understanding during this incredibly busy and difficult time for our staff and volunteers. While the event has been canceled, there is still plenty of work to be done on our end. We appreciate your patience as we evaluate our options going forward.

We have successfully completed 34 years of the Great Columbia Crossing, and while it was not our first choice to cancel this year’s event, we feel it is the best choice. We apologize for any inconvenience or hardship this has caused. We hope you will be able to join us on the bridge again in the future, under better circumstances.

All the best,

Kelsey Balensifer Event Coordinator, Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce
